In the Urdu group, discussion of the negative experiences of women with the health services went further. As the bilingual moderator was very much part of the community, she momentarily lost herself in the recollection of her interpreting experience with her invited participants and said:

When she went for the smear, there was a lady doctor. She said that she was embarrassed even with a lady doctor. I was there with her at that time. They didn’t explain to her what the test was, and I didn’t explain to her either. Because they didn’t explain to me. I know what a smear is, but nobody sat me down, and said to me ‘Well, could you explain to this lady’. All they said was ‘Could you ask her to take off her trousers and get on the couch’.
